Exploring the lobster as both a biological marvel and cultural icon, I am inspired by marine conservation, coastal heritage and the remarkable life cycle of this ancient species. Inspired by naturally occurring colour variations, I have been exploring recorded sightings by experienced Lobster haulers across the generations. A Lobsterman of 82 recalled the ‘Crimson Catch’ of his youth. A memory of wonder.As part of a series of work I have explored the similarity between colours of juvenile Lobsters and the rare coloured adults. Mirroring conservation projects with the brightly coloured young reared to maturity. In this painting the intense crimson palette celebrates the strength and vitality of this enduring species, the intricacies of biology and a long relationship with coastal community. My work explores the balance of admiration and responsibility. Through bold colour and intricate detail my work celebrates abundance and the stewardship required to preserve it.
