The artwork appears to be elaborately framed but this is an integral part of the artwork and cannot be separated, it is created on a single wood panel. The painting was inspired by the medieval allegory ‘Psychomachia’ by the Latin poet Prudentius. The poem describes the conflict of the vices and virtues in a battle to control the soul. The ancient game of snakes and ladders which was itself originally created as a game to illustrate this moral conflict has been incorporated into the design around a central image that represents the virtue of Chastity. This image is the final instalment to a series of seven similar artworks by the artist.
