This painting is an intimate and honest portrait of fellow artist and friend, Curtis Holder, as I see him. Outwardly Curtis is known for his outgoing and gregarious personality. However, behind this he is a self-confessed introvert, drawing his energy from time alone away from his busy life. His sensitivity and introspection is revealed in his work but is not always apparent to those who meet him. It is this inner side of him that I wanted to capture as an expression of our friendship. We initially tried a number of poses at the sitting, but Curtis is most himself when drawing. As such, it seemed right to capture him focused, and fully absorbed in his inner world doing what he loves.
