This is the third painting, and part of a trilogy that includes “Lying” that was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, and “What Will Be”.”Fly” nods to the “Fly Emirates” slogan emblazoned on football shirts worn all around the world. In this painting a man holds a bird in his hand and as it is, the bird cannot fly, despite being born to do so.Another consideration that led to this painting was that, if you have something (could be a relationship, land, artefacts, anything you treasure) but you have it by force or deceit…do you really have it at all? Is it still worth having?
