TRANSFORMATION, egg tempera on board, 30.5cm x 40.6cm, 2023Based on a walk at the Warham Iron Age Fort in North Norfolk, I began to imagine the inherent presence of the Iceni people in that landscape that inhabited this ancient sight. I considered how their unseen presence might be considered in an image, a painting. I was aware of the findings of archaeological investigation that discovered the remains of carion deliberately placed in the ditches by this ancient tribe, suggesting some type of spiritual ceremony, involved in death and rebirth perhaps. This led to my approach to this work, a sense of death and decayof the physical, but an acknowledgment of life and death, perhaps in an existence beyond the physical. A transformation.
