This painting, which began in the field, is inspired by drawings & observations of a small group of Razorbills on the slopes of a steep cliff face in North wales. Initially drawn to the rich colours of the rock face, I worked in layers of watercolour, ink & pastel to describe its colour form & shape. The black (deep chocolate brown in the sun) & white of the Razorbills (Llurs) looked so striking against the colourful cliffs. The arrival of Painted Lady Butterflies, nectaring on mouse-ear hawkweed further caught my attention. Their colours echoing those of the cliff face & the Razorbills felt like a natural fit.
