This piece was inspired by a late summer walk on the Marlborough Downs after some of the crops had been harvested. I wanted the plough lines to be dominant in this piece so that the contours of the Downs were highlighted. I decided therefore to use a graphite pencil first on the anthracite grey Pastelmat. These lines resisted the soft pastel colours layered softly over them. In some areas I used the soft pastels with a relatively light touch so that the anthracite grey remained visible.
