I was drawn to this subject because of his natural regalitya kind of quiet strength that doesn’t demand attention, but commands it. The pose, in profile and with closed eyes, invites reflection. It captures a moment of stillness, perhaps introspection, in a world that rarely allows for either.I approached the work in a direct painting style, working directly from life. I feel this approach allows for the model and my connection to them to be better felt in the work. The background is left ambiguous and darknot because there is nothing there, but because the story is in him, not around him.This painting is about dignity, about presence, and about holding complexity without explanation.
