Guernsey shipbuilder Peter Ogier launched the 196-ton brig “Island Belle” from his yard at St Sampsons in 1869. She traded steadily from Guernsey until, in a dense pre-dawn fog four days before Christmas in 1875, she was driven ashore in heavy surf at Bude. The Life Boat “Elizabeth Moore Garden” was sent out at once and though the “Island Belle” was soon a total wreck all of her crew of 6 were safely landed within half an hour from launching.
