My practice intersects cognition, contemplative practice and interdependence of nature and the internal mind. ‘Map II’ was made during a period of walking daily in the Australian landscape.I notice how large continuous and interconnected areas of the land are being increasingly broken up by human agricultural activities. Smaller isolated and unconnected patches of habitat are left exposed to become edges: interior ecosystem health is interrupted and shifted. The I-Ching talks about locating the proper position between oneself and the surrounding world, cultivating a proper attitude in guiding us towards balance and harmony. I try to follow the practice of not maintaining a fixed attitude – to flow with changeable states and conditions, with continual contrasts in myself and my external actions, adapting and moving. Through balancing up space and colour in the fragmented landscape, a kind of personal harmony through opposition and fellowship is shaped.
