At the end of 2019 I decided to make a drawing every day during 2020 and post it on a designated Instagram account, which I subsequently did. The first drawings I made were executed rapidly and intuitively during the winter evenings when it was cold and dark outside. I had no expectations where they were concerned – it was simply interesting to see what emerged.Having completed and published 366 drawings during 2020 I carried on into 2021. During 2021 the nature of the drawings I was making changed significantly: they became far more abstract, but still referenced or evoked landscape. I read a lot of Chinese “rivers and mountains” poetry, Taoist ontology and philosophy, and explored Chan Buddhist practice. This inevitably influenced the development of my work. I was concerned to show the world emerging-submerging: coming out of the originary confusion and sinking back into it, following the great respiratory alternation, breathing in and breathing out, that brings the world into existence.
