I began by painting the canvas a base of warm pink acrylic, onto which I mapped out the main structure of the landscape with dark purple oil and cold wax, focussing on tonal value and contrast. I also built up texture in the foreground, and for the shingle bank, which I would later ‘pick up’ with a light roller application of sandy oil and cold wax.Onto this base I began to define the shapes and lines, applying oil and cold wax in masked off bands and shapes; applying the paint with a mixture of palette knives, silicon tools, brushes and rollers to create different textures. As I built up the layers I constantly scratched back to reveal earlier layers, also providing textural interest and small details in the foreground.
