This piece is part on an ongoing series which examines sea glass in extreme detail, capturing the colour, light and textures of tiny pieces of glass that has been washed up and found on the beaches of Northumberland and County Durham. There were glass factories along the North East coast of the UK during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Waste glass was dumped directly into the sea and has been washed up ever since, meaning many of these tiny pieces will be over one hundred years old and began life as something quite different. Shaped by the sea, they are returned to the shore as tiny treasures, devoid of purpose but collected by locals and visitors alike, drawn to their colour and shine. The process of creating the Sea Glass series has gradually developed into a mediative one during a personally difficult time. There is comfort to be found in the calm, contemplation of shape, colour, light and pattern, away from the difficulties and demands of life.
