A monotype on Japanese Washi paper based on sketches & memories made while stealthily edging along the coastline of Puffin Island & drifting to the last point before having to follow the tide home. Its the last look back at the island, a very small window of time to make the last frantic drawings. Here the rocks are richly draped in kelp & rockweed, the light illuminating them in a fiery combination of yellows, ochres, vermillion & deep maroon. A group of Shags, the last sentinels, looking resplendent with a beautiful green sheen to their feathers, like me, look back towards the gulls in the distance, as they wheel around the ruins of the old semaphore station. This hand burnished monotype was made using oil based inks & was rolled, brushed, wiped on an acrylic plate & printed in many successive layers to create different depths of colour & marks. Trace monotype was layered over the top to emulate the drawn marks made in the field. Using these methods of printmaking felt like the most appropriate way to express the urgency of that last look.
