A pair of Great spotted woodpeckers chose the wooded den next to my new home in which to nest and look after their chicks. The trees are mostly ash and sycamore and these striking birds were surprisingly well camouflaged. The moving leaves in dappled light, combined with their jaunty hopping made them difficult to spot. It was often their sharp “kik kit kit” which guided me to their whereabouts. Presented in a white wood, gallery-style frame.
